After Luck With Poker, ESPN Bets on New York Dominoes
The next big thing in sports programming is dominoes?
ESPN has scouted dominoes at the Altamira Club in the Bronx.
To
the occasional domino player, it is a stretch to even call this quiet
game of straight-faced strategy a sport. But anyone who has spent time
in a Latino neighborhood in New York City could testify that dominoes
played there — with the slammed-down tiles, the verbal sparring, the
bragging and bluffing — is no parlor game.
From the opening bid, a simple sidewalk match will quickly
escalate into a raucous, freewheeling spectacle: a mini-fiesta where
salsa and cigars, Bacardi and brown-bagged beers have as much a role as
the little colored tiles with dots.
The games almost always drawspectators, so perhaps it is no surprise that the ESPN sports network
has declared dominoes the next big spectator sport and is promoting it
as both a colorful cultural touchstone and a highly competitive game,
complete with rankings, formal tournaments, celebrity events and
sponsors.
Encouraged by the success of televised poker, the
network has begun combing New York City for top players and colorful
clubs for its coverage, and has been taping segments on formal
tournaments and casual neighborhood games.
Hourlong domino shows
now run on Tuesday nights at 10 on the network's Spanish-language
sports channel ESPN Deportes. Hoping it will be popular with
English-speaking viewers, network officials plan to show similar
programming on ESPN2 starting in June.
"We think it will be the
next cool thing," said Lino Garcia, the general manager of ESPN
Deportes. "We're connecting with the best places dominoes is played, so
naturally we're going to start in uptown Manhattan and the Bronx, the
places where it really happens."

Domino Game Rated on the 20 Best Strategy Games
Throughout the centuries people have enjoyed games. From simple ones to pass the time to more complex ones that use strategy and challenge the participants to compete intellectually and have been called mental sports.One of them, the Domino Game, which has been rated in the 3th place of the 20 Best Strategy Games ever of the American Games Magazine.
The game features bones (tiles) with a number of pips on them. Players match them up trying to empty their hands by matching one of the numbers with one of the free numbers on the table.
Dominoes are also noted for being able to stand on end in long rows so that when one is knocked over they all fall in a row. A popular pasttime is lining up hundreds or thousands of dominoes to make designs when they fall.

Beckham Join the Stars for Dominoes
Victoria Beckham has said she is overwhelmed by Hollywood's glamour - and late night games of dominoes.The star spoke to The Daily Mirror about how she was setting finding Los Angeles as she spends more time there ahead of her family's move in the summer.
"I was at a party the other day when Tom Hanks came bounding over," she explained, describing her excitment at the showbiz climate. "He said, 'I'm so thrilled you and David are coming over. I'm going to get a season ticket to watch LA Galaxy now'.
"All the time he was talking I was just thinking, 'It's Forrest Gump! And he knows who I am!'" Beckham continued: "I don't know if I'll ever get used to that when we move here. I don't get out much, really. I'm usually with David and the boys."
The paper also reports an overheard conversation at the CAA pre-Oscars party. Penelope Cruz was apparently asking Beckham about a late-night dominoes game they had shared, along with Demi Moore, at Ashton Kutcher's house.
"They all had a really lovely dinner and afterwards Penelope whipped a dominoes set from her handbag," said a source. "They played for ages. It's all the rage in LA at the moment."
Beckham confirmed: "Penelope's such a sweetie, a real girls' girl. And Ashton and Demi are always touching and kissing like teenagers. David and I are quite tactile so it's lovely to see it with other people."

Tom Faulk - Dominoes Keeps Him in the Game of Life
In a story from the Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, Virginia:Tom Faulk can’t keep track of the details anymore. He doesn’t remember how long he was in the Air Force, when he got married or if he’s taken his morning medicine.
But put a game of dominoes in front of the 83-year-old, and his focus becomes clear. He shuts out everything but counting “pips,” or points on the domino tiles.

The Stafford County man will play for eight to 10 hours at a stretch.He doesn’t stop to eat, and he’s not interested in television, reading or going to gatherings for seniors.
If he’s not playing, he’s sleeping.
Faulk’s family speculates that the mental stimulation provided by his domino playing may have helped to keep him and his wife, Mary, who both suffer from dementia, out of nursing homes. Tom’s favorite game is All Fives(AKA “Fives Up” or “Muggins”). To read the full article click here.

Dominoes - A Game of the Past Present and Future
A game that can
withstand the tests of time is a game worth playing. Reason being is it
must be exceptional if it has been passed through generations to
generations. That’s exactly what has happened with the game of
dominoes. For many years, the game rather got lost in the shuffle with
all the hype over Casinos hitting the internet as well as Poker sites.

Yes,
there are many sites that you can and have been able to for some time
to go and play a game of dominoes, but never to the level that it is

before your opponents do. You then add up the pips on their tiles that
they have left and that is your score. Depending on which form of
